How sharing works

Tidypot is built for couples who share the household but not every penny. You choose what’s shared: accounts stay personal until you say otherwise, and anything you spend can be marked as just yours.

Shared, personal or balance only

You each have your own login. Every account and every spend has one of three settings:

  • Shared means you both see it, and it counts towards the household’s weekly figure. Joint accounts and household bills usually sit here.
  • Personal means only you see it. Your partner can’t see the account, its balance or what you spent.
  • Balance only means your partner sees the balance but not the spending behind it. It suits a credit card or savings you’re happy to be open about without showing every purchase.

A single spend from a personal account can still be marked shared, so the household figure stays right when one of you pays for the food shop on your own card.

Fair shares

Agree a split once: 50/50, in proportion to what you each take home, or your own numbers. Tidypot uses it to work out what each of you puts towards the shared bills and pots every week, and keeps a running balance when one of you pays for something shared. If Sam takes home £2,600 a month and Jo takes home £1,800, a split by income means Sam covers 59% of the shared costs and Jo covers 41%.

No bank login

Tidypot doesn’t connect to your bank, so neither of you hands over a banking login. Bills, pay and Child Benefit go in once and then post themselves on the days they’re due. Adding a spend takes about five seconds, because the places you use most are one tap away.

The Sunday check-in catches whatever didn’t get added. Type in your joint account balance and Tidypot compares it with what it expected, then adds any gap as a single “spending not logged” line so next week starts from the real number. If you don’t have a joint account, you can add a rough figure instead.

Using Tidypot on your own

You don’t need your partner to start. Set up your bills, pots and weekly figure on your own, and invite them when they’re ready. Nothing marked personal becomes visible when they join.

Do this in Tidypot

Tidypot records who paid each shared cost and keeps a running balance between you, split 50/50 or by income.
